Acadia National Park in the Early Morning

Acadia National Park takes up most of Mt. Desert Island. At the time of the parks formation it was the only National Park east of the Mississippi River.

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia is the highest mountain on the Eastern Seaboard, it is also the first place that light touches in the United States at sunrise. This led us to a plan of waking up at 4:30 A.M. to drive into the park and up the mountain to watch the sunrise. We arrived 30 min before sunrise to views of a bright pink and orange sky:

From this first view it only got better:

ALMOST THERE....

and the sun peeks over the horizon...

and it's up...

The rainbow on the west side of Cadillac Mt. after sunrise:

We decided once the sun was up to drive the park loop. It was amazing being in the park alone and getting to see everything with nobody else around.

Sand Beach:

Thunder Hole: at high tide when the waves crash into thunder hole it sounds as if it is thundering. Due to the hard granite around the alcove the softer rock in the alcove it created this narrow cutout into the rock. We also noted that when you walk to the edge you WILL get wet.

Coastal Sights:

Lobster Boat!

The sun rises higher!

Wide open spaces...

The park roads are peaceful at 6:00AM.
Even better was the smell of the pine trees. It was like Christmas in August!
