The Garden District

"New Orleans Garden District was settled in the 1850’s by successful entrepreneurs — the “nouveau riche” of that time. They built large, elegant mansions exemplifying many architectural styles, including Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne Victorians." ~From:http://www.inetours.com/New_Orleans/Garden_District.html

The Garden District is full of beautiful houses and great shopping. It is also home to restaurant Commanders Palace. We found ourselves inside Commanders Palace after hopping off the bus from the French Quarter and having a thunderstorm open up on us. Fortunately we were right next to a drug store so we hopped in, bought some umbrellas and headed out into the storm. Now if you know Nora, then you know this is a big deal considering her fear of T'Storms. Finding C.P. was a godsend and we entered the beautiful restaurant. After a drink while waiting for our table we were seated and had to chose what exactly we would eat from the delicious looking menu.

What we decided on:
After an appetizer of salads and samplers of Seafood Gumbo, Braised Rabbit Soup & Turtle Soup (yes I did try all three!) our main course arrived:

Beth's Meal - Pork Tenderloin on a bed of couscous.

Sue & Nora both had: shrimp with creole seasoning and linguine

And for Dessert....

Sorbet

and...
Bread Pudding Souffle

Oh...I can taste the bread pudding just from the picture!

OK. So there was more to the Garden District to just great food at Commanders Palace. There was also beautiful homes. After lunch we walked outside to find a nice sunny afternoon...well OK it was 90 and humid, but it had stopped raining!

1448 Fourth Street - Colonel Shorts Villa...the cornstalk fence that surrounds it.
2504 Prytania Street - Built in 1859 an American Merchant, is now owned by the Women's Opera Guild.
2423 Prytania Street - Just a pretty house
2343 Prytania Street - Built in 1872 for the 100,000 at the time, for sugar planter Bradish Johnson.
1239 First Street - Built in 1857 now owned by Anne Rice.

An Arbor across the sidewalk.
If I had a horse I would tie him up here...
Pretty Flowers growing in someones yard.
Tree Roots Growing along the sidewalk:

BANANAS - gotta love a place where they just grow everywhere!

Lafayette Cemetery #1
The deceased in New Orleans are all buried above ground due to the very high water table under the city. Nerdy science lesson on water tables will be left out so don't worry you can keep reading!

The cemetery walk was cut short due to the scary man that hours earlier we had seen on the street waving to us showed up in the cemetery and starting yelling to us saying he worked there and to come talk to him...YIKES!

Shopping on Magazine Street...
Magazine Street in the Garden District is a 6 mile long road on which you can find parks, houses, restaurants and SHOPPING. You don't have to think very hard to figure out what the three of us used this street for...the shopping!

A cute lil bead shop we found in our travels:

The Bead Shop is on 4612 Magazine Street. They have such nice stuff and we all got Fleur De Lis charms to remember our vacation by. The owner of the shop was so nice and we also met a woman who has her own stamping blog. Lexi Daly - she has such cute stuff go take a look!
(just click on her name...mom thats for you because I know you won't know what to do :-P )

More flowers along Magazine Street & the Garden District:

Just one more stop before leaving Magazine Street....GELATO!
